Golden Era Grit: Training, Eating & Living Like IRON Gladiators

Good morning, fellow Gladiator. I hope you had a GREAT weekend
and you are ready to destroy everything that stands
in your way.

All weekend I was in Staten Island for Baseball and I was
remembering when Staten Island was known for having
a few hardcore gyms.

Those days are gone. Today, the "hardcore" are mostly in
their own garage and basement gyms. Commercial Gyms
are an extension of influencers and too many people
working their thumbs while laying on benches and
machines as if it was their living room.

This is why I love the era of the past - when training was REAL
and strength was a way of life.

Not something you posted about for likes.

Not a TikTok trend or 30-day “shred” program.

I’m talking about the kind of strength men lived—mentally, physically, and spiritually—like it was part of their DNA.

And that’s exactly what this new episode of IRON ROOTS is about:

Listen Here 👉 https://zacheven-esh.com/iron-roots-19/

We dive into the real roots of training—before NASA engineered
machines, before social media, before “science” tried to
overcomplicate it all.

What you’ll hear in this episode:

  • The grit and mindset of old-school lifters who trained in
    the original YORK Barbell Gym.
  • Why today’s lifters are missing the point—and how to fix it.
  • Forgotten principles from the Golden Era that still build real men today.
  • Tales from the trenches: no fluff, just raw strength culture.

This isn’t just a podcast…
It’s a wake-up call.

If you're tired of watered-down training and men being told to
stop being strong, this is for you.

Most lifters today are afraid of overtraining.

John Grimek?

He was still outlifting men half his age — well into his 60s.

That’s just one of the powerful stories you’ll hear in IRON ROOTS Episode 19 with Jan Dellinger (Part 3 of 7).

🎧 Listen here: https://zacheven-esh.com/iron-roots-19/

In this episode, we dig into:

  • How Grimek trained as he got older and the unique exercises he used
  • The Bruno Sammartino training program that young Jan Dellinger ordered from a magazine
  • Why the idea of "overtraining" didn’t exist back then — and what they did instead
  • The early business roots of Bob Hoffman and York Barbell (hint: it started with oil burners!)
  • How lifters like Grimek ate, trained, and lived — with strength as the foundation

This is the kind of stuff no "influencer" talks about.

I would be writing and sharing with you if the internet burned down.

Why?

I LIVE for this.

It’s for men who respect the roots. Who train not for attention — but because it’s who they are.

Good morning, Gladiator. I have a great reminder for you today..... Yesterday evening I went to my local high schooland got to watch some Summer Wrestling. It's quite simple actually, yet the "experts" keep denying these truths. The majority of wrestlers who were jacked and strong were the wrestlers who were winning. Yep. In a world where the "gooroos" are talking like everyone is "too strong" and how strength is making them slower, I saw the opposite. The wrestlers who were jacked and strong...

Good morning, Gladiator - today is our final day here in Georgia and it's been one helluva trip. The travel sports experience continues to be something that reminds me what NOT to do when it comes to coaching and business. I've spent amazing time with my son and we've had a lot of laughs and great experiences together. I shared a few of them to my Instagram. ========== Today I want to continue sharing my lessons from the era that most influencers are trying to sell today as "secrets" and...
